David Gilmour New Album Collaboration with The Orb's Dr Alex Paterson

Pink Floyd's David Gilmour is to collaborate with The Orb's Dr Alex Paterson to work on a new album.

In an interview with The List, Dr Alex Paterson said "I’ve just started work on an album with David Gilmour from Pink Floyd which I think every Orb and Pink Floyd fan will want to hear."

The album is likely to be in the very early stages so it is not likely to be released any time soon.

Another mysterious remixes & Alex' collaboration

Aaron Miles has pointed out that KLF Communications site is listing 4 Orb remixes I have never heard of:

Run of Run DMC - Praise my DJ's (Orb Mix) 4:15
Scott Brown - Johnny (Orb Mix) 2:08
Subsonar - Stand Strong (Orb Duat Remix) 8:10
Red 5 - Life Me Up (Orb's Up Remix) 5:39

Discogs lists only Red 5 mix, but claims that it was made by some other Orb, not ours. Don't know if it's true or not.

And also some sources claim that album All in a Day by hip-hop artist Backyard Dog features guest appearance not only by Alex Paterson, but also "by the late Kirsty MacColl, Steve Hillage, the Beloved and Jeremy Healy's Easy Posse."

If you have more info about these facts, let me know.

Mysterious Orb remix - Lindsey Cockwell

Some of you might remember the mysterious promo CD-R for Badorb's Bless You compilation which included exclusive track Tiny Snatch by Lindsey Cockwell. Aaron Miles was able to find this track and noticed that it sounds very orb-ish. It might be produced by Orb or remixed by the band (the track is 3:26 long). Lindsey Cockwell official site has interesting quote: "...Somewhere in the middle of all this her ear for melody was spotted by Alex Patterson of the Orb who produced a version of her song 'Tiny Snatch Of Daylight'..." The track has basslines and pretty good production. Her own stuff is quite minimal in comparison.

So, if someone knows anything about this track - let me know.

The Orb To Perform Tubular Bells

by Paul Cashmere - May 31 2009

House pioneers The Orb will pay tribute to Mike Oldfield`s classic `Tubular Bells` with a special performance of the piece called Orbular Bells.

The performance will take place in London on June 6th as part of the British Music Experience, a new and permanent exhibition to be housed at the O2 Arena.

The Orb will perform a DJ set featuring the Tubular Bells music while in another performance, The Hard Bell Ringers of Great Britain will do their own version of the classic on the same day.

Paul Lilley, curator of The British Music Experience, commented: "Tubular Bells is a much loved classic British album and I can't think of a more appropriate place to celebrate it than at The British Music Experience, fast becoming the home of music history in the UK. Interactivity is key to the exhibition and I know children and adults alike will be clamouring to have a go themselves."

The event is free to attend.

Baghdad Batteries tracklist

Seminal UK ambient outfit The Orb are set to release their new LP, Baghdad Batteries in July.

Widely credited as a driving force behind the early '90s chill out and ambient house movements, the group has existed in various different formats during their two decade life span, with founding member Dr Alex Paterson remaining the only consistent player throughout. Baghdad Batteries heralds the reunification of Paterson and long-term collaborator Thomas Fehlmann who last sparred together on 2005's Okie Dokie It's the Orb on Kompakt.

The album will be the third in the Orbsessions series for UK imprint Malicious Damage, although whereas the previous two entries were comprised of "nuggets trawled from the vaults," the latest offering will be composed of brand new material recorded at Fehlmann's Berlin studio. So how does it sound? Expect a "subterranean house pulse beamed up from the Earth's core, resulting in a new form of space disco which sounds as old as time itself while brushed with the most future-pointed minimal techno shadows," and you'll be somewhere close.

Tracklisting
01. Styrofoam Meltdown
02. Chocolate Fingers
03. Baghdad Batteries
04. Raven's Reprise
05. Dolly Unit
06. Super Soakers
07. Suburban Smog
08. Orban Tumbleweed
09. Pebbles
10. Woodlarking
11. OOPA

Malicious Damage will release Baghdad Batteries by The Orb on July 6, 2009.

Resident Advisor web site. Thanks to Aaron Miles for info.

New Orb album news + The Orb has remixed Transmission

Info from Malicious Damage:

"THE ORB: BAGHDAD BATTERIES {orbsessions vol iii}

this is all mixed, mastered and being manufactured at the moment... it's all
brand new material from alex paterson and thomas fehlmann, it'll be released on july 6th and here's a slice of the press release: "... the good Doctor sets the controls beyond any Earthly confines and gets down to stratospheric sound painting and advanced sonic science, sprinkled with an avant garde disregard for conventional structures. These startling electronic odysseys are hatched with long-time collaborator Thomas Fehlmann, The Orb's Berlin connection who's been there from the first album and last made his towering presence felt on 2005's Okie Dokie album for the renowned Kompakt label, bastion of Berlin techno. Such is the case with Baghdad Batteries where the pair have injected some of these breathtaking outings with a subterranean house pulse beamed up from the Earth's core, resulting in a new form of space disco which sounds as old as time itself while brushed with the most future-pointed minimal techno shadows..."

Detailed Orb discography

I like text-based discographies. Since 2001 I was constantly updating The Orb discography based on old Lazlo Nibble's work. And now I want to share my work with you. The file (270 kB big) contains all Orb releases, remixes and compilation appearances every Alex Paterson collaboration & dj mix, Andy Hughes, Andy Falconer & Kris Weston discographies and much more. Take it from here. It is rough text, so it includes some mistakes, my comments etc. See it in a text editor and do not wrap lines (some are quite long).

Some older releases

The Orb has made a very nice mix for Resident Advisor (released 8 Jan 2009). The page also contains interview with Youth. You can download the mix for free from here (it's not available from Resident Advisor site anymore). The tracklisting is not given, but I was able to reveal most of the tracks, so it goes like this:

1. Ulf Lohmann - Audrey (4:05)
2. Ulf Lohmann - Kristall (3:50)
3. unknown (3:48)
4. The Orb - The Forest of Lyonesse (0:21)
5. Andrew Thomas - I Am Here Where Are You (3:42)
6. The Orb - Snow Bow (2:03)
7. Gas - Gas 1 (9:46)
8. Klimek - Sun(rise) (4:14)
9. Köhncke/Heimermann - Albatros (8:03)
10. Thomas Fehlmann - With Oil (3:04)
11. Ulf Lohmann - Nicht die Welt (2:22)
12. Markus Guentner - Chrom (6:41)
13. Ulf Lohmann - Audrey (4:10)

Most of the tracks are taken from various Pop Ambient compilations. Track 3 is still a mystery to me. If anyone knows what is it - let me know.

Paterson has also returned to make remixes. Last year we were able to have remix for Infadels (made by Alex and Tim Bran): Circus of the Mad (orb remix) (5:40) released on A Million Pieces single (details) and a mix available on Verve//Christmas Remixed compilation. It's track 5: Louis Armstrong - What A Wonderful World (the orb remix) (5:31) (details - made by Alex and Thomas Fehlmann). Both mixes are totally different - Infadels one is in The Dream fashion and Armstrong is more Okie Dokie-ish.
